Revolver Club Review - May 2008

REVOLVER – SATURDAY 24TH MAY 2008
REVIEW FOR SEENQUEEN

Ever since we heard about the launch of this new monthly clubbing event, we have been eagerly anticipating the day, making advance arrangements to ensure our diaries were cleared to take complete advantage of this full blown clubbing extravaganza.

Brought to us by the fabulous Oliver M and Logan, promoters of Matinee London, our expectations were high and having spoken with Oliver before the event, the plans to transform Scala in Kings Cross, the venue for Revolver, sounded fantastic and very much in-line with the brilliant production we have come to expect from this duo.

So, finishing work at 11 p.m., it was then just a hop, skip & a jump down to Scala, arriving at the stroke of midnight where we were greeted at the entrance by friendly staff who soon ushered us in and pointed us in the right direction up the stairs. Being Scala virgin’s, we were not sure where to go or what to expect from the venue, but soon found ourselves in the Foyer Bar, where Electra was holding court on the impromptu decks, with a crowd of expectant clubbers gathering to party the night away.

Having armed ourselves with refreshments, we headed up more stairs and through into the main arena and were immediately bowled over by the magnificent space. Eschewing its days as a theatre/cinema the high ceiling was reminiscent of clubs like Action, Salvation and many other European counterparts and true to form, the production was amazing, with huge Revolver banners hanging from the sides of the room and the stage adorned with fabulous signage, lighting and equipment, all ready for the show that was to come.

Wanting to investigate the venue more, we climbed yet more stairs and entered a wonderful glass bar, which had a bird’s eye view over the main room, with plenty of comfortable seating to relax, chill and oversee the events below. As if this wasn’t enough and truly complimenting the circuit feel that the promoters wanted to emulate, we climbed yet more stairs to find a completely separate space, bar and dancefloor which has come to be known as the penthouse. Nathan 6 was pumping out a gorgeous mix of funky house tunes to a select crowd showing their appreciation. So good was his music choice that we stayed and boogied away for much of the rest of his set, until the draw of the main room pulled us away.

Meandering down the labyrinth of stairs and corridors, we found ourselves back where we had started and having found our bearings, hit the main room again to find it bursting at the seams with a truly metrosexual mix of muscle hunks, clubbing boys & girls and a crowd definitely up for a great time. By now Jon Dennis, who opened proceedings, had handed over to special guest DJ, Matinee star Enrico Argentini, who took us on an amazing music journey mixing up classic Matinee style tunes with “hands in air” tracks, which had us trading high dancing vantage points with trips onto the main floor itself, shunning our usual habit of sticking by the DJ Booth.

The best was yet to come and with the stage lights focussing on sexy go-go boys, then entered the fabulous Coco Star, drawing everyone’s attention as she performed her massive hit Toca’s Miracle and more, getting momentous cheers from the crowd as she entertained a packed Scala. The stage acts didn’t end there as Coca gave way to yet more go-go’s and a stunning acrobatic display by an athletic muscled guy suspended down from the ceiling.

By now the tone for the evening had well and truly been set and we traded trips between the main arena, the penthouse and the foyer room, savouring the delights of Enrico, Eduardo De La Torre and Guy Williams, eventually settling on the foyer room to lap up the unique funky house and latin twisted vibes of Brent Nicholls, who seemed in his element in the revised setting, drawing a crowd of hopeful boys and girls who just didn’t want the party to end.

With the perfect antidote to a boring Bank Holiday working provided by Revolver, we escaped the clutches of Scala and disappeared into the Kings Cross morning to continue our partying south of the river, before our sensible minds had to kick in for a days work.

So, did Revolver live up to all the hype created over the last few weeks, for us that has to be a resounding YES!! With magnificent production, a top notch DJ line up, a brilliant stage show, a great PA and all combined with the stunning venue that is Scala, we simply could not have asked for more, great music, great atmosphere great people, great company, great everything!!

Launching on a Bank Holiday Saturday could have been seen as a risk and whilst the venue clearly takes a huge crowd to fill every dance space, there was no doubt that Revolver was a big enough draw despite the fierce competition of The White party & others draining hard earned cash across the whole holiday weekend. We certainly hope that it will become a regular feature of the London clubbing calendar and eagerly anticipate the next Revolver instalment with interest (DISCO MATT)
